Barkies

Barkies is a student-led club dedicated to improving the lives of animals in local shelters by providing volunteer support, promoting responsible pet care, and encouraging adoption through awareness and community involvement.

Club Overview

Impact on Students

  • Barkies helps students develop empathy, responsibility, and compassion by giving them hands-on experience caring for animals in shelters. Through volunteering, fundraising, and adoption outreach, members learn teamwork, service, and the importance of advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Social Consequences in Nicaragua

  • In Nicaragua, many animals face neglect, overcrowded shelters, or lack of proper care. Barkies helps address this issue by supporting shelters, improving living conditions for animals, and raising awareness about responsible pet ownership and adoption — ultimately promoting a kinder and more humane culture toward animals.

Understanding Social Responsibility and Civic Engagement

Barkies teaches students that community care includes caring for animals. Members actively engage in service by helping shelters, educating others, and encouraging ethical treatment of pets, fostering a lifelong commitment to compassion and civic involvement.

In Short

Barkies makes a meaningful difference by improving the lives of sheltered animals, while also inspiring students to practice empathy, social responsibility, and active community service in Nicaragua.
